On September 30, 2025, the Lake County Forest Preserve District’s sale to the US Department of Veterans Affairs for the expansion of the Fort Sheridan National Cemetery was completed. The Forest Preserves will continue maintenance of the Cemetery through November, 2025, but as of December 1, all maintenance of the Cemetery will be the responsibility of the National Cemetery Administration, through the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
The expansion of the Fort Sheridan National Cemetery will enable the VA to install columbaria for the above-ground interment of cremated remains.
